Signs that your vehicle’s brakes are failing

Each aspect of your car needs to work in coordination for optimal performance and safe travel. Like any other form of machinery, cars are prone to mechanical failures at times.

A mild fault, such as an interior heating malfunction or a slight leak, may not place you in immediate danger. However, a flaw with a fundamental component of the car, such as the brakes, could prove costly. Brake failure accidents are relatively rare, but when they do occur, they can cause severe injuries and even fatalities. Recognizing some of the common warning signs that your brakes are failing could keep you protected.

Has a warning light appeared on your dash?

Modern vehicles are fitted with sensors that can gauge when something is not right. These sensors trigger lights on the dash when a fault has occurred. Although a brake warning light could just be an electrical fault, it may also be an early warning that your brakes are in need of repair.

Vibration from the steering wheel

When applying the brakes, you shouldn’t feel any wobbling or vibrating coming from the steering wheel. If this is the case, it could be a signal that something is going wrong. On an average trip, you may apply the brakes hundreds of times, which means they are subject to wear and tear. Staying on top of this will not only help to protect you but also those around you.

Brake fluid levels

Do you remember topping up your brake fluid recently? If so, it may seem strange that levels are now empty. Braking systems tend to be hydraulic, which means they rely on fluids in applying the appropriate stopping pressure. When fluid levels drop, it could be a sign that there is a leak, which will reduce your stopping ability exponentially.

Ensuring that your brakes are in prime condition could help to protect you from injury on the roads. If you have been harmed by a road traffic collision, you might want to explore the legal options at your disposal.
