What should I do to stay safe when driving in fog?

Fog is one of the most difficult types of weather conditions in which to drive because it impacts your ability to clearly see. Being alert and aware of what is happening on the roadway ahead, behind and around you is essential to safe driving.

When fog makes it impossible to see, it can introduce serious risks, increasing the chances that you might have an auto accident. While you should always wait to drive until the fog lifts, that is not always possible, so you need to understand what you can do to stay safe.

Increase visibility

The National Weather Service explains that you should make your vehicle visible to other drivers. Make sure your headlights are on even if the sun is up, but do keep them on your low beams. High beams will bounce off the fog and obscure your vision even more. You can use fog lights if you have them, which will help to increase what you can see.

Also, check your taillights and brake lights to ensure they are working properly.

Know when to leave the road

If the fog is so thick that you cannot even see the lines on the road or cars immediately ahead of you, there is little choice but to pull off the road. Continuing on will put you at a high risk for an accident. You should put on your hazard lights and pull off somewhere that you can be completely off the roadway.

Practice good habits

You should treat fog like any other adverse weather. Slow down and take your time. Make sure that you increase the distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
